FAQ

Answers to our top questions about Chocho, the Andean super protein.

Chocho is an ancient lupin that has been used for thousands of years by Indigenous Andean communities. It grows at an elevation of 11,000-14,000 feet, and it’s a highly functional protein source that’s packed with good stuff—fiber, vitamins, minerals, all nine essential amino acids, and as much calcium per serving as a glass of milk.

Pure Chocho has a mild, nutty taste that blends nicely without overpowering other flavors. Cacao and Vanilla have a touch of sweetness. All of our products are natural and free of artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners.

Only if you choose to use it that way. We think of our powders more as meal enhancements, adding protein to whatever you want to eat rather than replacing what you want to eat.

Definitely not. Chocho Superfood Protein is incredibly versatile. It can be used as a gluten-free flour replacement for baking, mixed into savory sauces, packed into homemade ice cream...you name it. And because of its wide range of uses, Chocho is not something you'll get tired of consuming.Check out our blog for more a recipe ideas!

Chocho is a lupin, and unlike most other legume-based proteins, our proprietary debittering process ensures that our Chocho Superfood Protein is free from lectins. Lectins are proteins that are resistant to being broken down in the body, so they can cause digestive problems. All Mikuna products are 100% lectin-free.

It’s vegan, soy and lectin free, and paleo and keto friendly. Made from just 1-5 ingredients, Mikuna is premium functional nutrition that keeps you full and nourished, and it tastes downright delicious.

No. Chocho is a whole food and the only source of protein we use in our products. While many protein powders are blends, Chocho Superfood Protein is made solely from Chocho—no pea, no soy, no quinoa (AND more protein than all three combined!).

Between Cacao, Vanilla, and Pure Chocho, the most popular flavor constantly changes, but at Mikuna we like to keep a healthy competition going. (The person writing this is Team Vanilla for life, but her editor thinks Cacao is #1.) For those looking to use Chocho Superfood Protein in their cooking, Pure Chocho is the most popular since it can be used in both sweet and savory recipes and adds the most neutral of all three flavors without any additional sweetness.

How It’s Made

As it grows, the Chocho plant pulls nitrogen deep into the soil. This increases soil vitality and water retention capability, and can actually make the soil more fertile for crops grown directly after Chocho! Plus it’s drought-tolerant and thrives on rainwater alone. It’s good for the body, good for local Andean farming communities, and good for the earth.

Our network of farmers grows Chocho in the high elevation of the Ecuadorian Andes mountains. The crop has adapted to a temperate climate and can tolerate strong Andean winds. It’s solely rain-watered and prefers moist soil, but can tolerate drought and sandy soils.

Once Chocho has finished growing, the seeds are typically hand-picked and collected by farmers in Indigenous communities for sorting.
